PATF Accessible Vehicle Loan Helps Family Travel Safely in the Community

Patti Leer has lived with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for many years. When her symptoms progressed and it became unsafe for her to transfer from her wheelchair to her car, Patti and her husband, Patrick, contacted PATF for assistance. "Patti, me as her caregiver, and anyone else helping her were all at increasing risk of injury caused by falls," says Patrick. "When transferring to transportation becomes too risky, you start deciding not to leave home."

The Leers obtained a PATF loan to purchase a wheelchair accessible van. "Our van has empowered us to do things and go places that Patti has not known in years," says Patrick.

Patti and Patrick were also pleased with the application process and personal customer service from PATF. Patrick explains, "Gretchen (PATF Program Assistant) talked me through the PATF process and monitored it all the way until the morning I met with our local Sovereign Bank Branch manager. In 22 years of living with MS in our family, I've never experienced such understanding and advocacy."

To help spread the word to other families; Patrick posted a video clip of a press conference at the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg where he and Patti spoke about the PATF program and the importance of assistive technology.
