What is Assistive Technology?
An Assistive technology (AT) device, as defined in the Assistive Technology Act of 1998, is "any item, piece of equipment or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals."
Assistive Technology (AT) devices include home modifications such as ramps, widened doorways and grab bars; vehicles with adapted steering controls and wheelchair lifts; reading machines; hearing aids; and computers with adapted hardware or specialized software.
AT services help an individual with the selection, acquisition and training as to how to use an assistive technology device. Services may include an evaluation of needs; the designing, selection, fitting or customizing of AT; and the maintenance/repair work.
Examples of AT services include the installation of a stairglide; the building of a ramp onto a home; customizing a powered wheelchair; and training consumers and family members on the use of voice-activated computer software.
